Wakefield Girls Lacrosse Falls to Lexington
The Wakefield High girls lacrosse team fell to Lexington, 16-6, to open the season.
The Wakefield High girls lacrosse team started its season off with a 16-6 loss to Lexington High School (1-0) on Tuesday at Lexington’s Lincoln Field as wind whipped rain pellets onto the field and turned umbrellas inside out.
“Very rough day,” said Wakefield head coach Cara Luca.
The team, who went 2-17 in its 2010 season, hadn’t had any preseason scrimmages as they were cancelled because of snow, leaving the Warriors with just two outside practices prior to Tuesday’s season-opener.

“So it was pretty tough,” continued Luca. “I lost a lot of seniors last year and this year my whole team is all veteran players except for maybe like four, so hopefully we’ve learned from this. We have a lot to work on.”
The Warriors went down 5-0 at 16:38 in the first as Lexington’s explosive offense continued to hammer shots.

The Minutemen scored their five in a matter of about five minutes—22:37, 20:58, 19:48, 18:40, 17:33 and 16:53—before Wakefield senior captain Kate Nixon (five goals) got the ball past Lexington sophomore goalie Maya Elany at 16:38, putting the Warriors on the board.
“First game at the varsity level,” Richmond said of Elany. “Corey Michon is hurt right now, so (Elany) was thrown into the fire.”
Nixon added two more goals for Wakefield to Lexington’s six going into the half, standing behind an eight-goal deficit at 11-3.
Wakefield’s offense intensified in the second half when Nixon added two more goals at 17:07 and 8:41. She pushed from Lexington’s defensive area to Wakefield’s attack, basically running right through the Minutemen to score.
But Nixon’s efforts, and junior Justine Carlson’s goal with 22 seconds remaining - the Warriors’ sixth - wasn’t enough. Lexington won by 10.
Next up, Wakefield plays Belmont High School on Thursday at 4 p.m.
As for how the girls will play, Luca said, “Hopefully better."
“We need to pass more,” she continued. “We’re not passing as much, we’re not communicating as much; our defense, we’re not picking up our man-to-man. So we have a lot to work on before our next game on Thursday.”
