Wakefield Girls Track Picks Up First Win

The Wakefield High girls track team beat Stoneham for its first win of the season.

The Wakefield High girls track team finally got the monkey off its back on Thursday, with a big, 70-66 upset win over Stoneham for the Warriors’ first win of the season. 

The Spartans came into the meet with just one loss on the year. With the win Wakefield improved to 1-4 overall. 

Kayla Milburn was the star of the meet for Wakefield, taking first in the triple jump with a 31-3.75, the 100 hurdles with a 17.3 and second in the high jump with a 4-10.

Jessica Duffy picked up a first place finish in the shot put with a throw of 34-9.5 and took second in the discus with an 84 to lead the Warriors in the throwing events, while Liz Bray finished second in the shot put with a 43-2.

Melanie Miksis won the two-mile in 13:01, just three seconds ahead of teammate Jennifer Sapanaro who finished second. Rebecca Quirk ran a 2:30 in the 800 for first place and Rachel Wong came in second in the 200 in 27.7.

The boys track team didn’t fare as well as the girls on Thursday, dropping a 78-57 decision to Stoneham to drop to 0-4. 

Stephen Robertson won the mile in 4:49.3, while Jonathan Miksis won the high jump with a 5-6, Brett Tassanari won the triple jump with a 38-5.25, Pat Feeley won the shot put with a 40-11.75 and  Marc Bucchieri  took first in the 800 with a 2:15.4. 

Up next for both teams is a home meet against Melrose on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
