Wakefield Historical Society Announces Fall Schedule
Events, Museum Open Hours, Burying Ground Tour, and more

Wakefield’s oldest preservation organization, the Wakefield Historical Society, has announced its plans for its 128th season of activities and events.
The fourth annual Wakefield Heritage Day will take place on September 30th. From 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the Museum at the West Ward Schoolhouse (39 Prospect Street) will be open to the public, displaying its exhibit: Cyrus Wakefield’s Wakefield Wicker.
During those hours, the schoolyard will house a sale of pumpkins and mums as well as a white elephant sale. (Donations of interesting and useful ‘white elephants’ will be gratefully accepted: anything from LP’s to antiques, excluding televisions and computer monitors.) All proceeds from the sale of fall produce and flowers, as well as the ‘white elephant’ table, will benefit the preservation of Wakefield’s beloved 1847 West Ward Schoolhouse, which houses the Museum.

Heritage Day activities will move to the Old Burying Ground from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., when an Old Burying Ground cleanup day will take place. Volunteers are sought to help scrub and clean the ancient gravestones. More information about this activity will be forthcoming in the Item, and is posted on the Society’s website, wakefieldhistory.org.
Later this fall, the Society plans its annual Twilight Tour of the Old Burying Ground, scheduled for Friday, October 27th at 5:30 p.m. The tour is free of charge and begins in front of the First Parish Congregational Church. In case of inclement weather, the tour will be postponed.
