Wakefield Sons and Daughters of Italy Show the Christmas Spirit

The Sons and Daughters of Italy Wakefield Lodge know how to have fun, help the community and EAT! For their December meeting, they did a little of each.

Members met at a different location for this meeting; the Wakefield Elks. Per usual, they chose Chinese food for their annual Christmas dinner. Many may be surprised to learn this fact. It makes sense that they can cook their own Italian foods, but are not as likely to cook other ethnic specialties. Special thanks to Jade Gourmet for a great meal at a reasonable price.

The community group they sponsored this holiday season was Heartbeat Pregnancy Help Center in Burlington, MA. Members donated diapers and baby clothing for new mothers in need. The Lodge also made a cash donation. This month, Heartbeat has a big need for diapers sizes 1-4 and baby boy clothing sizes 0-3 months and 3-6 months.

Another way the group helps in the community is with scholarships. The Grand Lodge of Massachusetts offers an annual scholarship to a graduating high school senior. Information about this can be found at osiama.org/scholarship.html. The Wakefield Lodge also offers a scholarship through the Grand Lodge. Information on how to apply should be available in local high school Guidance Offices.

Topics discussed at the meeting included how to have more fun! Taking in a show at the Greater Boston Stage Company (formerly Stoneham Theater), and starting a summer bocce league were two ideas which were entertained. As was a summer cookout catered by Laurie’s 909.
