Wakefield Town Administrator Announces Retirement
After 17 years of service as the town's chief administrative officer, Stephen Maio will retire this summer.

WAKEFIELD, MA — At the January 13, 2025, Town Council Meeting, Wakefield Town Administrator Stephen Maio announced his upcoming retirement. After 17 years of service as the Town’s chief administrative officer, Steve will retire on July 3, 2025. The position of Town Administrator falls under the jurisdiction of the Town Council, and the Council will be responsible for appointing Steve’s successor.
Over the last few years, Steve has worked with the Town Council and his staff on a succession plan to ensure a smooth transition. To that end, he is pleased to announce that Kevin Gill has been promoted to Assistant Town Administrator / Chief Financial Officer. Kevin served as the Town Accountant for 23 years and is a trusted member of the Town’s leadership team. This organizational change will provide a solid foundation for, and ensure continuity of services during, the transition.

Liz Rourke was hired as Wakefield’s Town Accountant. Liz has over 20 years of municipal experience, including 11 years with the Town of North Reading, and 12 in the City of Somerville. She holds Master's in Accounting from Suffolk University, a Certificate in Local Government Leadership and Management from Suffolk University, and is a Certified Governmental Accountant.
Prior to his appointment as Town Administrator in 2008, Steve served on the Board of Selectmen (now Town Council) for nine years. He also managed a law practice specializing in land and real estate transactions. In July, Steve will join many close family members retired from public service, including his wife Jean and mother Dorothy, retired teachers, and his father Dr. Stephen Maio, retired Superintendent of Schools for the Town of Wakefield.
