Wakefield Town Council Notes - August 17, 2026

A summary of Wakefield's Town Council meeting on August 17, 2026, from Town Councilor Jonathan Chines

The Town Council met for its August meeting on Monday, August 17th. Here's a summary of what we covered:

  • The Council voted unanimously to name the basketball court at the new Wakefield Memorial High School in honor of long-time teacher and coach Brad Simpson.
  • We approved a recommendation from the Conservation Commission to require a resident on Fourth Street to pay for environmental remediation and restoration to a parcel of Town-owned land in the area, upon which the resident had constructed a swing set and volleyball court for their personal use. We also appointed James Cerone to an open position on the Commission.
  • The Town will be soliciting applications for residents to form a Charter Review Commission, which convenes every ten years to review Wakefield's charter and make recommendations for potential changes. The Charter Review Commission will include eight residents, plus one voting representative from the Town Council. Applications will be collected through the end of October.
  • The Town Council approved updated versions of its Use of Lake Quannapowitt Shore Property Policy, Bench and Structure Policy, and Public Participation Policy. We also discussed some potential administrative changes to the Complete Streets policy, which will be further reviewed at a future meeting. Finally, we discussed whether the Town Council should create an Appointments Subcommittee to interview applicants for board and commission positions, ultimately deciding to maintain our current process.
  • We approved the issuance of Bond Anticipation Notes, which are short-term bonds used to finance certain capital projects, as well as a Massachusetts Water Resources Authority bond to support water and sewer improvements approved by Town Meeting. We also approved a routine transfer of $1 million from the General Fund to the Town's Debt Service Capital Needs account.
  • The Council approved a one-day liquor license for Idle Hands Craft Ales, which will be operating a beer garden at Town Day on Saturday, September 26. We also discussed Wakefield's 2rd annual Porchfest, which will be held on Saturday, August 29. Mark your calendars!

Our next meeting will be on Monday, September 14. Of note, we will be receiving an update on the Envision Wakefield Downtown Revitalization project at that meeting. To learn more about the project, please join us in-studio at Wakefield Community Access TV or on Zoom.
