Wakefield Town Council Notes - May 18, 2026
A summary of Wakefield's Town Council meeting on May 18, 2026, from Town Councilor Jonathan Chines

Here's a summary of what we covered at our Town Council meeting on Monday, May 18:
- Forestry and Parks Supervisor Dennis Fazio was recognized for his 10 years organizing the Wreaths Across America program in Wakefield.Since 2016, this program has decorated veterans graves at Forest Glade and Lakeside Cemeteries for the holiday season.
- The Town Council declined to request a two-year waiver from the state Cannabis Control Commission that would have allowed us to prohibit cannabis deliveries in Wakefield. While retail cannabis establishments are prohibited under Wakefield's bylaws, recent state legislation allows for cannabis deliveries statewide unless communities request a waiver.
- The Council approved three liquor licenses for alcohol vendors participating in the Wakefield Farmers Market for the 2026 season. The licenses approved will permit bottle sales as well as tasting for individuals age 21 or older.
- We approved the reconstruction of the three Friends of Lake Quannapowitt kiosks located around the Lake. We also provided provisional approval for a new accessible picnic table at Colonel Connelly Park, with final approval expected in July following a public comment period.
- The Town Council reviewed Wakefield's Bench and Structure Policy, which was originally adopted in 2019. The Council expressed a desire to broaden the policy to cover all public lands, not just playgrounds and spaces adjacent to Lake Quannapowitt. An updated version of the policy will be presented to the Council at a future meeting for approval.
- The Council made appointments to the Economic Development Council, Historical Commission, Board of Registrars, Affordable Housing Trust, and Council on Aging. Many thanks to all the individuals who volunteered to serve on these committees!
- The Town Council elected its leadership for the coming year. I'm grateful to my colleagues for selecting me as Chair, and eager to serve with our new Vice Chair, Councilor Stacey Constas.
Our next meeting will be held on Monday, June 8, beginning at 7:00 PM on Wakefield Community Access Television and Zoom. I hope you can join us.
