Wakefield Weekly Sports Roundup

The Spring season is underway, and the student athletes of Wakefield took to the field of play all over town last week. Let's take a look at how the locals fared.

The Spring season kicked off around the town of Wakefield last week, and despite the last gasps of winter delaying things a bit, local student athletes took to the fields of play in full force.

The Wakefield High boys lacrosse (1-1) team fell 9-7 against Lexington in the season opener, but bounced back in a big way, routing Malden 19-1 in a non-league tilt. The Warriors face a tough test in Middlesex League rivals Belmont on Tuesday in Belmont.

On the girls side of the field, things didn’t work out quite as well. The Lady Warriors (0-2) fell 16-6 against Lexington in the season opener, and lost the home opener to the Marauders of Belmont High 15-2. The Wakefield girls face Winchester in a tough league battle at home on Tuesday.

On the baseball diamond, Wakefield (1-0) got its season off to a thrilling start with a 6-5 walk-off win over Wilmington High in a non-league tilt. Captain Connor O’Brien swatted a single to right that drove in Josh Orlowitz with the winning run in the home half of the seventh to break a 5-5 tie. The Wildcats will have an opportunity to avenge the loss on Friday, when the two sides square off again.

The Lady Warriors (0-1) softball squad also took part in a nail-biter to open the season, but were on the wrong end of a walk off winner, as Bishop Fenwick’s Abby Curran plated the winning run in the seventh to hand Wakefield a 3-2 opening day loss. The Lady Warriors will open their Middlesex League schedule with a road game against always tough Stoneham on Tuesday.

Moving to the tennis court, the Wakefield boys began play with three straight losses, losing all but one match during opening week. The Warriors’ lone match winner was Andrew Krevat, who earned a victory at second singles against Stoneham on April 6, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The Warriors fell to the Spartans 1-4, and then were downed 5-0 by Reading and Lexington on April 7 and 8.

The girls track team was also in action, and was defeated by Burlington 81-55 in the season opener, despite the program registering its largest number of runners in many years. The Lady Warriors are 65 strong this year, small when contrasted with a team like Burlington who numbers 105. Senior captain Rachel Wong and junior Kayla Milburn finished second and third in the high jump, and Milburn placed third in the 100 meter hurdles. Wong won the 200 meter hurdles. Elite junior runner Rebecca Quirk won the mile at 5:35:00, and freshman Kelly Ledoux-Walsh placed third, logging a personal best time of 6:05:00. Junior Patty Malone won the 400 meter run at 64.2. In throwing events, Liz Bray was Wakefield’s lone scorer, placing second in the shot put.

The Lady Warriors face Reading and Winchester in a Middlesex League tri-meet on Tuesday.
