WAKEFIELD, MA — A Wakefield native has taken home a gold medal at the 2016 World Parachuting Championships last week.

Wakefield native Matt Davidson, 42, and his U.S. Army Golden Knights took home the gold medal in 8-way formation diving at the championships at Skydive Chicago. The World Championships drew more than 700 skydivers from 38 countries vying for the title of world champion in five different skydiving disciplines, according to a United States Parachute Association press release.

Teams of eight exit the airplane more than two miles above ground and race against the clock to form a series of geometric formations in freefall before opening their parachutes.
