Weekly Sports Roundup, April 11-17

The spring season marched on around the town Wakefield last week, with mixed results for local teams. Here's how the Warriors fared.

The Spring season continued around the playing fields of Wakefield this past week, with multiple teams seeing action.

Boys and Girls Lacrosse both earn split

The Warriors boys lacrosse team split a pair of games last week, and is now 2-1. Wakefield suffered a devastating loss against Middlesex League rivals Belmont on April 12, getting to within one point before losing 9-8. Ryan Doherty and Mike Dellanno (2 goals each) led the charge, while Alec Brown, Ryan Dalton and Kevin Doherty all added goals.

Dellanno (5 goals) was again the catalyst for the Warrior attack, while Ryan Doherty (4 goals), Corey Davis (3 goals) and Brown (2 goals, 5 assists) weighed in as well. Bridges collected 12 saves in this one as well.

On the girls side of the field, after being soundly drubbed by the potent Winchester Sachems on April 12, to the tune of 16-2, the Lady Warriors bounced back in a big way.

Facing Burlington in a crucial ML matchup, Wakefield responded with a second-half comeback and a 13-11 victory.

Trailing 8-6 at the break, the Lady Warriors righted the ship and sailed to their first win of the year.

Junior captain Casey McAuliffe (5 goals, 2 assists), junior Erin Riley (4 goals, assist) and junior Paige Maguire (2 goals) led the way, while junior Samantha Morris (goal) and sophomores Jackie Yandell (goal, assist) and Gabby Moscato (assist) chipped in also.

Netminder Stephanie Wallace was tremendous between the sticks for the Lady Warriors, recording 9 saves including several key late stops.

Warriors Baseball drops a pair

The early going has not been kind to the Warriors so far this season. Facing Lexington in their Middlesex League opener on April 14, the Minutemen throttled the local nine 14-0.

Following close on the heels of their walk-off win against Wilmington in the season opener, the Warriors again faced the Wildcats on April 15. This time, Wilmington would be the ones walking out with a one run win, as they downed the Warriors 3-2.

Wakefield is now 1-2 on the year.

Boys, Girls Tennis woes continue

The tough times continued for Wakefield High’s tennis programs last week, with neither the boys nor girls teams tasting victory.

The girls lost at Woburn on April 14 by the score 5-0, then against Winchester on April 15 by the same scoreline. The Lady Warriors have managed to capture just one set in their four matches so far this year.

The boys played twice on the road, and dropped both contests. The Warriors lost to Belmont 5-0 on April 11, and then 4-1 against the Tanners of Woburn on April 14.

Both the boys and girls teams are now 0-4 on the year.

Boys Track still seeking first win; girls split a pair of meets

The Wakefield boys track team is 0-3 on the season after dropping a pair of meets last week against Winchester and Reading by identical 75-61 scores.

On the girls side, Reading bested the Lady Warriors 86-50, while Wakefield beat Winchester 73-63.

Winners for the girls included Patricia Malone who posted a 63.6 time to win the 400 hurdles, Rachel Wong, who won the high jump with a 4-8, and the 200 hurdles with a 27.1 mark and Elizabeth Bray, who won the shot put at 34.

Kayla Milburn won the triple jump with a 31-3, and took second in the high jump and third in the 100 meter hurdles.
