Weekly Sports Roundup: May 15-May 22

Rain put a damper on things around the athletic fields of Wakefield this week, but it wasn't a complete loss as the Lady Raiders softball squad recorded a big win over Middlesex League rivals Reading. Here's a look at how the locals fared.

That sound you heard last week was that of Wakefield High coaches simultaneously tearing up their schedules, as a week’s worth of rain washed away nearly all the games on the docket. As the wettest spring on record got even wetter, the student athletes of Wakefield High were largely consigned to the sidelines as many games were postponed and rescheduled.

That being said, the week wasn’t a complete washout and some squads got a little action in. Here’s the rundown from the fields, diamonds and courts of Wakefield.

On the baseball diamond the Warriors were able to get two games in this week, and fell to Reading 4-2 in Middlesex League showdown on May 20. The Warriors then defeated Watertown 8-5 on May 21 at Watertown. Wakefield falls to 5-11 overall and 4-10 in ML play.

Softball Beats Reading

Lady Warriors softball played a single game last week as well, but what a game it was. Wakefield nipped Reading 4-3 in nine innings behind Megan Leary (3 RBIs) and junior hurler Laura Caton. After spotting the Rockets three runs in the first inning, Caton recovered and proceeded to retire the next 21 batters in a row, and Leary led the charge as the Lady Warriors rallied to tie the game. Leary—who finished 4-for-5 with three doubles—doubled home Taylor Purcell with the winning run in the ninth. Wakefield is 7-9 overall and 7-8 in the Middlesex League.

Boys Lax Wins Twice

Boys lacrosse played two games, and the Warriors scored a pair of big wins. On May 18 Wakefield (8-7, 2-5 ML) defeated Melrose 18-4 in a Middlesex League tilt and bested the Greater Boston League’s Cambridge Rindge & Latin 17-4 in a non-league clash on May 20.

Girls Lax Goes 1-2

On the girls side of the equation, the Lady Warrior played three times last week and came away with one win.

Facing CRLS in a non-league battle on May 16, Wakefield (6-10, 2-9 ML) earned a 15-8 victory over the a Falcons. Wakefield traveled to Malden next to face the Golden Tornadoes in another non-league tilt, and this time fell 16-15 at Pine Banks Park in close game that wasn’t settled until right before the final whistle. Next up was a Middlesex League battle with Reading on May 21. The Lady Warriors fell 23-11 at the hands of potent Rockets.

Girls Tennis Loses Twice

Girls tennis played Melrose twice last week, on May 16 and 17, and fell 3-2 on both occasions. On May 16, Wakefield winners included Nicole Wu, who prevailed at first singles, 6-0, 6-2, while Shira Faigel and Alison Doherty won at first doubles, 6-3, 6-3.
