Weekly Sports Roundup, May 2-May 8

The Wakefield High student-athletes suffered through another wet week. It wasn't a total loss, however, and play went on undisturbed for a few teams. Here's a look at how the locals fared.

Wet weather again returned to plague the student athletes of Wakefield this past week. 

Many contests were washed out in the middle of the week, but there was still plenty of action around the athletic fields of Wakefield.

Girls Tennis Picks Up First Win

The Wakefield girls tennis team earned its first win of the season, sweeping past Woburn 5-0 on May 3, after falling to Lexington 0-5 the previous day.

The Lady Warriors are now 1-6 overall.

On the boys side of the court, the Warriors are still seeking that elusive first win of the season.

With rain thwarting all but one match, Wakefield (0-10) fell to Woburn by a 4-1 margin on May 3. Andrew Krevat provided the lone point from second singles with a come from behind win, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4.

Dylan Sellers played well at first singles but came out on the wrong end, while the same can be said for Nick Perry and Adam Celikman at first doubles.

Baseball Loses in 10

Wakefield baseball lost a tough game in 10 innings against Melrose on May 2, by an 8-4 margin to drop their overall record to 3-7 overall and 2-6 in the Middlesex League. The Warriors ran up against Melrose starter Ryan Hardy who fanned 10 while incredibly pitching the entire marathon affair.

On the softball diamond, the Lady Warriors suffered through a tough week, losing twice in as many games.

On May 2 it was Melrose who served Wakefield with a 10-7 loss, while Lexington snuck away with a 4-3 win on May 6.

The Lady Warriors are now 3-8 overall and 3-7 in league play.

Boys Lax Thumps Watertown 

Moving to the lacrosse field, the Wakefield High boys squad went a perfect one-for-one last week, earning a convincing 17-5 win over Watertown on May 3.

The Warriors improved to 5-4 overall with the win.

On the girls side of things, only one game went down last week and the Lady Warriors were outpaced by Lexington 19-11 on May 5, and now sit at 2-5 overall and 2-5 in the league as well.

Boys Track Wins First Meet

Boys track beat Watertown 92-44 and lost to Lexington 90-46 during a tri-meet on May 3. The win gives the Warriors their first win of the season and leaves them at 1-5 on the year.
