Weekly Sports Roundup, May 22-May 28

The Wakefield High student athletes wrapped up the regular season last week under pristine blue skies. Here's a look at how the locals fared.

With the spring season winding down, the student athletes of Wakefield High enjoyed a picture-perfect week for outdoor sports.

Under blue skies, the Warriors wound down the regular season and now at least one Warrior squad will look forward to competing in the MIAA Sectionals.

Boys Lax Finishes Strong

The Wakefield boys lacrosse team stormed down the stretch, winning its last five contests to seal a berth in the tourney. Two of those wins came last week.

The Warriors (11-7, 2-5 ML) made the lengthy drive to Dracut on May 23, and handed the Merrimack Valley Conference Small School Champion Middies a 17-5 loss. Two days later, on May 25, it would be another MVC foe that would fall to the surging Warriors. Chelmsford High, of the MVC Large, fell to Wakefield 14-8. Alec Brown had three goals and five assists, while Ryan Doherty netted four goals and an assist. Mike Dellano potted three goals and Corey Davis bagged a brace as well.

The Warriors now face the Burlington Red Devils in the preliminary round of the MIAA Division 2 East Sectionals on May 31 in Burlington.

Girls Lax Wins Twice to End Season

The WHS girls ended the season on a high note with a pair of wins last week, but still wound up one game shy of postseason qualification, finishing at 9-11.

The Lady Warriors bested Watertown 17-15 on May 23, and blasted Melrose 24-10 on May 27.

Baseball Loses Finale 

Wakefield baseball wrapped up the regular season with a pair of Middlesex League contests last week. On May 23, the Warriors faced Melrose in a rematch of a May 2 game that was captured by the Red Raiders in extra frames. This time, it was Wakefield that pulled down an extra inning victory, beating Melrose 4-3 in eight innings. Brendan DeLeire pitched seven innings and scored the game-winner in the eighth.

Wakefield next faced Burlington on May 24 in the season finale, and fell to the Red Devils 7-4. 

The Warriors wound up the year at 6-12, and missed out on the postseason.

Softball Goes 1-3 

The Wakefield softball team finished the season with four games, and came out on top in one of them.

On May 23 Wakefield faced Melrose and dropped a 5-4 decision. Next, the Lady Warriors traveled to Watertown and grabbed a 12-0 blowout win. Laura Caton fired a complete game and picked up her eighth win, while Abby DiCredico and Megan Leary played well for the Lady Warriors. On May 25, Wakefield played Bishop Fenwick and needed a win to keep its postseason hopes alive. It wasn’t in the cards, however, as the Lady Warriors playoff hopes were crushed under a 10-0 defeat at the hands of the Crusaders. Wakefield ended its season with a 2-1 defeat against Burlington on May 27.

Boys Tennis Loses Two

The Warrior boys tennis squad lost its last two matches of the season against Melrose, and will look to regroup for next season after a difficult 2011 campaign.
