Weekly sports roundup, May 9-May 15
Wakefield High's student athletes continued their pursuit of glory on the field of play last week without the impediment of any inclement weather. The Wakefield Boys Tennis team will be having a car wash at Flo's in Wakefield on May 21, between 9am and 2

The student athletes of Wakefield High enjoyed a week without interruption, as the weather finally cooperated for the duration. That being the case, the sports schedule was a full one last week, with action across all arenas.
Here’s the rundown:
On the baseball diamond, the Warriors began the week on May 9 against Middlesex League rivals Belmont and fell by the score of 5-1. Marauders junior hurler Mark Rocha fired a complete game and earned his first varsity win.

The next time out, May 11 against Stoneham, the Spartans had a 5-4 advantage heading into the bottom of the sixth, but senior captain Connor O’Brien drilled a two-run bomb to lift the Warriors to a 6-5 victory
On May 11 Wakefield traveled to Woburn for a tough road battle with the Tanners, and Woburn avenged its eight-inning, 7-6 defeat on April 21 with an 8-7 win against Wakefield to earn a split of the season series.

The Warriors ended the week with a wild shootout against Winchester, and held on for a thrilling 17-16 win. Wakefield went 2-2 on the week, and now sits at 5-10 overall and 4-9 in league play.
Softball Wins Two
Matters on the softball diamond proceeded in a similar fashion, except the Lady Warriors played three games last week and won two of them.
After stomping Belmont 14-2 on May 9, the Lady Warriors received a dose of karmic justice, as the Stoneham Spartans visited a similar fate upon them, to the tune of a 15-5 loss on May 10. Wakefield led 5-4 as late as the top of the fifth, but an offensive eruption of Vesuvian proportions halted them in their tracks. Samantha LaPierre led the Lady Warriors with two hits—including a triple and three RBIs, while Megan Leary collected three hits, Abby DiCredico bagged a hit and Maggie Hartrey scored a run in the losing effort.
Wakefield (5-9) would end the week with a 5-2 win over Woburn on the road.
Boys Lax Goes 2-1
Wakefield boys lacrosse had a solid week, winning two of three, and only surrendering the perfect mark on the week in extra time against Burlington on May 11.
Kevin Doherty tied things up with just nine ticks left in regulation, but the Warriors ran out of gas in the OT and fell by a 10-9 final score. Michael Dellanno bagged a hat-trick, Corey Davis nabbed a brace and Alec Brown and Ryan Doherty each tallied a goal and two assists.
The Warriors wouldn’t let the emotional let down of losing an overtime tilt get them down, however, and came back strong in the final two games of the week, beating Reading 11-5 and blasting Saugus 17-4. Wakefield is now 7-7 overall.
Girls Lax Drops Two
On the girls side of the field, the Lady Warriors scored a big win over Cambridge Rindge & Latin on May 9 by a score of 20-10, but then dropped a pair of Middlesex League games against Belmont on May 10 (20-7) and Woburn on May 12 (12-5).
The Lady Warriors are 5-8 and with seven games to play, they are very much alive and in with a chance of making the MIAA Tournament.
Boys Tennis to Hold Car Wash
The Wakefield Boys Tennis team will be having a car wash at Flo’s in Wakefield on May 21, between 9am and 2pm, and will be accepting donations.
On the court, the Warriors played five matches last week, and despite failing to win any of them, gave a good effort, and captured a few games.
On May 9 Wakefield squared off against Winchester and fell in 5-0, as they would also do the following day against Belmont.
May 11 the Warriors faced Watertown and were defeated 4-1, but Andrew Krevat picked up a win at second singles, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Facing Watertown again the following day, the results were the same, but this time it was Dylan Sellers at first singles who pulled down the point for Wakefield, 6-1, 7-6.
Wakefield’s second doubles team of Tom Wimsor and Neal Suh won its first match of the year, prevailing 1-6, 7-6, 6-4 during a 4-1 loss to Burlington on May 13.
On the girls side of things, the Lady Warriors fell to Belmont 5-0 on May 10, and to Watertown twice by identical 2-3 scorelines on May 12 and 13.
