Weekly Sports Roundup, October 10-16

A look at all the local sports action around Wakefield last week.

Football - Wakefield High School
The Wakefield High football team made it four in a row on Oct. 15 with a 35-7 drubbing of Middlesex League Small School Division newcomers Wilmington on the road.

The Warriors are now 5-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Dan Cardillo got things started for Wakefield after a scoreless opening frame, with a 3-yard touchdown run, giving the Warriors a 7-0 lead after the first of four Brian Auld PAT conversions. Zach Bates would collect a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter, on runs of one and four yards, and Wakefield led 21-7 going into the fourth quarter. Josh Puccio scored on a 28-yard run, and Matt McKenna hauled in a 26-yard pass from James Bourque to cap the Warriors scoring on the day and provide the final margin of victory.

Wakefield hosts Burlington on Oct. 21 as ML Small play continues.

Football - Northeast Metro RVT
The Knights also made it four in a row last week, picking up a 26-7 win over visiting Manchester Essex of the Cape Ann/Northeastern League in a non-conference tilt. Northeast is now 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference Large Division, and currently sits tied for the league lead with Greater Lawrence.

Bobby Novello led the charge for the Knights, racking up 180 yards rushing and one touchdown, while Kenny Bartolo (35-yard run), Paul Scott (22-yard pass from David Mahon) and Jonathan Hughes (22-yard run) also added touchdowns for Northeast.

The Knights return to the gridiron on Oct. 22 for a CAC Large clash with Lynn Tech.

Girls Soccer - Wakefield High
The Lady Warriors suffered a 2-0 defeat against Woburn on Oct. 15, and are now 3-7-1 overall. Wakefield will play at Melrose on Oct. 17 in a ML Small tilt.

Boys Soccer - Northeast Metro Tech
The Northeast Metro RVT boys soccer team picked up a win over Shawsheen Tech last week, on Oct. 10, by a 1-0 margin.

Girls Soccer - Northeast Metro Tech
The Northeast Metro RVT girls were handed a lopsided 4-0 defeat against North Shore Tech on Oct. 11.

Boys Golf - Wakefield High
The Wakefield High golf team played one game last week, a road battle against Reading, and failed to get a result, falling 47-25. The Warriors are now 7-8 overall, and 3-2 in ML Small play.

Boys Cross Country - Wakefield High
The Warriors (5-0, 3-0) continued their perfect start to the season with a 22-33 win over ML Small rivals Burlington at home.

Senior Stephen Roberts was the fastest around Wakefield’s 3-mile course, finishing in 14:23, while sophomore Aaron Lucci placed third at 14:56. Senior James Bridges was fifth at 15:36, Marc Bucchieri took sixth with a time of 15:53 and junior Jared Gellar finished seventh at 15:53.

Girls Cross Country - Wakefield High
The Lady Warriors easily handled visiting Burlington on Oct. 11, running to a 18-45 win at their home 3-mile course. 

Wakefield is now 4-1 overall and 3-0 in league play.

Sophomore Kelly Ledoux Walsh finished first with a time of 19:35, while senior Jennifer Saponaro took second at 19:38. Emily Curran, a sophomore, placed fourth at 20:12 and sophomore Lucy Howard ended in fifth with a 20:35 mark. Freshman Emily Hammond (20:47), senior Francesca Marino (20:48) and sophomore Margaret Gourville (20:56) placed sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.

Field Hockey - Wakefield High
The Lady Warriors (2-7-1) faced a tough task last week in the form of a road trip to Watertown to face the ML Small league leaders, currently undefeated at 12-0. Wakefield became the latest victims on Oct. 12, falling to the Raiders, 4-0.

Mystic Runners Lake Q 5k
The weekly jaunt around beautiful Lake Quannapowitt went down on Oct. 12, and a pair of local harriers topped the leader board.

Bob Halsey, 39, of Wakefield, took first place with a 18:59 mark, while fellow Wakefieldian Matthew Lyons, 33, finished second at 19:15. Stoneham resident brian Daley finished third with a time of 19:51, while Reading’s Gerry McDonald took fourth at 20:20. North Reading native Chas Gallant rounded out the top five at 21:46. The fleetest female on the afternoon was Stoneham’s Krissy Nowell, who finished in seventh at 23 minutes even.
