Weekly Sports Roundup, September 5 - September 12
Highlights this week from Wakefield football, golf, and soccer.

The fall high school sports term officially got underway this week, with several Wakefield High squads kicking off their seasons. Although the mid-week rain put a damper on some of the season opener’s, the week wasn’t a total washout, as plenty of teams began play.
Elsewhere in Wakefield, the Mystic Runners held their weekly “Lake Q 5k” road race around Lake Quannapowitt.
Wakefield High Football
The Warriors took on Middlesex League rival Lexington on Sept. 10—under new head coach George Peterson, who took over for Bill Tighe, who retired after last season following 35 years at the helm. After falling behind 7-0 in the first quarter, Wakefield responded with a three-touchdown second stanza to seize control of the contest. Quarterback James Bourque hit Dan Cardillo for two scores and Zach Bates collected a 4-yard touchdown run as the Warriors did all their damage before the halftime whistle and held off Lexington to earn an opening day win.

Wakefield High Golf
Head coach Dennis Bisso’s golf program kicked off the year on Sept. 7, but failed to get the result they were looking for. The Warriors fell to Burlington, 38.5-33.5, at Bear Hill Golf Club in Stoneham. Wakefield picked up three wins from individual play, but was unable to get the result against the Red Devils, despite turning in a solid all-around effort. Co-captain Brian Melanson picked up a win at number two, prevailing in a 5.5-3.5 duel, while junior Matt Carney earned a 5-4 win at number three. Kyle Leone tok his match at number five, coming out on top of a 5-4 decision. The Warriors are 0-1, and have little time to dwell on it as four games in four days this week will certainly require everyone’s full attention. Wakefield takes on Lexington on Sept. 12 at Bear Hill starting at 3:30.
Wakefield High Boys Soccer
After a dismal 1-10-1 campaign last term, the Wakefield High boys soccer team opened the new season in much the same fashion it closed the last: with a loss. The Warriors fell, 2-0, against Arlington on Sept. 7 to open the fall. Wakefield’s home opener is scheduled for Sept. 10 against Winchester.
