A closer game through the first two periods of the contest, Monday night’s hockey contest between Andover and Wakefield went completely Andover’s way in the third period, resulting in the 6-3 victory for Andover. Wakefield held a 3-2 lead after the first period, thanks in part to goals by Bailey Finocchio, Gabby Moscato, and Nicole Loftus, but Wakefield could not score again for the rest of the game.

Boys Varsity Basketball
Reading 56, Wakefield 49 [OT]
The momentum that Wakefield had built over their last few games – putting together a modest winning streak as they attempted to qualify for the tournament – was squashed by Reading, who needed extra basketball to defeat Wakefield 56-49 in overtime. Junior Keyon Armstrong led Wakefield scoring with 13 points, and he was helped out on the court by seniors Dan Looney and Matt Rej. The loss left Wakefield just one victory shy of qualifying for the tournament with just one more game left on the schedule.

Reading 59, Wakefield 32
Wakefield knew they would have their hands full facing the Rockets in their home court, as the Rockets boast one of the most skillful scoring crews in the Middlesex League. Despite holding Reading close through one period, Wakefield saw Reading pull away in the final three quarters of the game. Though they held Reading’s Olivia Healy to just 10 points on the game, they could not answer Carlene Kluge, who netted 23 while Wakefield’s attention was on Healy.

Reading 2, Wakefield 0
Despite a staggering 40 shots on goal, Wakefield could not find the back of the net with any of them and thus was shut out by Reading, 2-0, in the season finale of the 2010/2011 season. Wakefield goalkeeper Shannon Leary worked her magic in the net, keeping it a one-goal game until late in the third quarter when Reading added an insurance goal. Wakefield wraps up its 2010/2011 season with an overall record of 4-13-1, including a 4-11-1 record in the Middlesex League.

Reading 3, Wakefield 2
Reading’s dominance over Wakefield this week continued as the boysvarsity hockey team dropped a 3-2 contest to Reading at the Burbank Arena. The loss drops Wakefield to 6-4-3 in the Middlesex League, while powerhouse Reading improved their record to 11-2-0. Despite some chances in the final moments of the game by Wakefield, who had pulled goalie Joe Cerulo in favor of the extra skater, Wakefield could not find the back of the net and Reading skated their way to victory.

Melrose 75, Wakefield 39
The Wakefield High boys basketball team needed to win its final game of the season to make it to the MIAA tournament with the magic number of 10 wins, but the loss to Melrose dropped the Warriors to 9-11 overall to end their season.
Girls Varsity Basketball
Wakefield 44, Melrose 39
After a disappointing season for the Wakefield High girls basketball team, the Warriors ended the 2010-2011 campaign on a high note with a win on Friday at Melrose. Wakefield finished 4-16 overall this season.
