Wakefield 53, Watertown 50

The Wakefield Memorial High School boys varsity basketball team tournament hopes stayed alive after an upset victory over first place Watertown on the Red Raiders’ home court, winning a tight game 53-50.  Dan Looney and Be Ekhator led scoring for Wakefield with twelve points each, though the real key for Wakefield was limiting the damage done by Watertown’s Marco Coppola and Connor Stockdale.

 Girls Varsity Indoor Track

Belmont 50, Wakefield 36

The season’s final meet did not as members of the WHS girls varsity indoor track team had hoped, dropping the 50-36 decision to Belmont to finish the season 1-4.  Among the highlights for Wakefield was the work of junior Sarah Ingersoll, who placed second in the 45-yard hurdles with a time of 7.5 seconds.  Juniors Jessica Duffy and Patty Malone also earned first place finishes in their competitions, the shot put and the 300 meter dash.

Boys Varsity Indoor Track

Wakefield 53, Stoneham 33

The WHS boys varsity track team ended their dual meet season on a positive note, beating the Spartans from Stoneham 53-33.  Junior James Bridges earned track player of the week honors after coming in first in the two mile run with a time of 11:21:3.  The victory leaves Wakefield with a 3-2 record for the year.

 Girls Varsity Ice Hockey

Watertown/Melrose 7, Wakefield 1

The WHS girls hockey team fell to Watertown/Melrose 7-1 on Thursday night.  Erika Kelly netted four goals against Wakefield, with Wakefield’s lone goal coming from Gabby Moscato in the second period.  It was not enough to overcome Kelly and the rest of the opposition, though.

Girls Varsity Basketball

Stoneham 46, Wakefield 21

Wakefield knew that it would have a tough go against the Spartans from Stoneham, but when you factor in that Wakefield was minus its two captains, Aimee Reynolds and Alyssa Chankhour, it was not difficult to imagine the outcome of the event.  Despite a solid effort from freshman Kristie McNall, who netted eight points in a 90 second span in the third quarter, Wakefield could not handle Stoneham, a perennial powerhouse in the Middlesex League.

 Boys Varsity Basketball

Wakefield 79, Stoneham 55

Wakefield’s march to the tournament continued in the right direction on Thursday night, with the Warriors pulling out an impressive 79-55 victory over the Stoneham Spartans.  Kendall Hamilton led the scoring for Wakefield with 23 points, though the highlight of the night was undoubtedly the return of senior captain Anthony Fabiano, who had missed the entire season to this point with an injury.
