WHS Auditorium Naming Rights Going Out For Bid
State law requires competitive bidding when value is over $25,000. RFP process expected to determine actual value of naming rights for recently-constructed auditorium at WHS.

The town is expected to issue a request for proposals for the naming rights to the recently constructed 275-seat auditorium at Wakefield High School.
During Tuesday night's Wakefield School Committee meeting, members noted that the venue was originally expected to be named The Savings Bank Theater. However, state law requires a competitive bidding process because the value of the naming right, while yet to actually be determined, is expected to exceed $25,000.
Committee member Lisa Butler was among those who expressed disappointment at the development, citing The Savings Bank's support for the high school in general. Chairman Tom Markham acknowledged the previous decision had been premature and suggested that "we may land exactly where we were." But that said, Markham added that "the determination must be made through a process in which there is competition."
The request for proposals notes that the auditorium was built in 2011 at a cost of about $1 million and that it features "state of the art projection, lighting and sound facilities, including a control booth."
The winning bidder will be able to designate a name and logo, if desired, that could be an individual's name, a business trademark, or some third party the proposer would want to honor.
"It is anticipated at the Mark will be prominently displayed in one location outside the Wakefield High School building (subject in all events to Wakefield zoning bylaws signage restrictions) and within the center on the wall behind the stage facing the audience," states the RFP, adding that all proposals will be evaluated for their appropriateness for use on the school building.
Along with the amount of money offered for the naming right, a bidder's involvement in the town of Wakefield over the years will also be considered.
The process is expected to last for about 50 to 60 days.
