If you remember going in for your driver’s license test, you still might get a knot in your stomach when you think about it. It’s a big deal for a teenager. It’s a rite of passage, for starters, that marks their first real step into being an adult and having the privileges and responsibilities that go along with that. It’s also a prestige issue. Having a driver’s license means that, among your peers, you’ve taken a huge step in status. Unfortunately, neither of these things are really what one should have in mind when they take an RMV exam. Driver training can help that.

Understanding the Test
The first step in reducing nervousness is developing focus. While there are huge lifestyle and social implications for teens when they first test for their driver’s license, the test is really just about getting the legal right to drive. Focusing on this is much easier when you know you have the requisite skills already, and that’s how attending a driver’s training course helps.

Knowing the Skills
I’ve been teaching driving skills since 1984 and, in that time, have learned the best way to teach new drivers the skills they’ll need when they’re out on the road. The RMV test is designed to assess whether or not a driver has those skills and, with our 46-point instructional program, they will have those skills when they go in for their RMV test.
When a teen knows that they’re skilled behind the wheel, it helps to diffuse the nervousness they’ll feel when they go in for their exam. Having taken a driving course already, they’ll have been tested for the skills they need and, in fact, will have taken coursework that holds them to higher standards than the RMV test. Most of the nerves that people experience when they take a test come from the fact that they don’t know what to expect. When they have some idea of what the test will involve and when they’ve already gone above and beyond those requirements in their training, the test doesn’t have nearly as much intimidation factor as it would otherwise.
Pass Rates
Students who go through training at Bill Rehill’s Driving School pass their road tests more than 98% of the time. Part of what makes this possible is the fact that we train drivers on roads similar where they take their tests and that goes a long way toward reducing intimidation. Reducing intimidation allows the student to be more focused on their test and to use the skills they’ve learned to satisfy the requirements of the exam.
We also have students drive with one of our instructors before they take the exam, so they get a chance to review what they’ve learned and to diffuse some of their anxiety. With the right training, students don’t have to worry whether or not they have the skills to get their license, they only have to focus on doing what they’ve learned to do and on being present in the moment when they’re testing.
