4th Annual CROP MOB at Waltham Fields! 6/24, 9-noon

Help us mob the fields to pull weeds, and save our crops so we can offer great fresh vegetables to all our food access programs!

Weeds. Grrr! Those unwanted plants that know how to pop up in all the wrong places.

Go away for the weekend, turn your back for just a few days...and the beautiful rows of vegetables you carefully planted and tended can very quickly get crowded out by these 'undesirables.' A weed*, which is any plant that is growing where you don't want it (hello, mint! stop spreading all over the place!!) are especially good at competing above ground for sunlight and below ground for moisture and nutrients with their fast-growing roots. Here at Waltham Fields Community Farm we inherited weedy fields when we started our organization 22 years ago, because the fields had not be farmed in a while. We adhere to organic pest management practices, and the most effective way to tackle the weeds is by hand or hoe...so we are asking you to come and help us Mob The Fields and Pull Them Out!

Saturday, June 24th, from 9am - noon, come on by the farm and we will gladly share all our weed-pulling secrets with you! The more people the better - we hope to weed several beds of vegetables that will go to all our food programs. Waltham Fields grows food that is distributed to our weekly Outreach Market in downtown Waltham, our donations to food banks, food pantries and nutrition programs, our CSA farm share programs and even the Waltham public schools. Your weeding efforts will directly relate to the quantity and quality of food we can provide through all our food access outlets, so that high-quality fresh, local vegetables are available to all.

Bring sun protection, wear close-toed shoes, bring a water bottle if you have one, and stop by the shelter in the fields with the chalk board that says 'Welcome Volunteers' to check in. We have gloves if you want them. All are welcome! Kids need to be monitored by adults at all times.

Waltham Fields Community Farm is located at 240 Beaver Street, Waltham, behind the brick UMass building.

*Okay, so 'weed' can also mean a certain plant that is very desirable to some, but that's not what we're talking about here!!
