Waltham Remembers Flooding, And The Memories May Aid Climate Resilience: Report
Researchers at Brandeis University have documented the city's perhaps surprising history of serious floods.
WALTHAM, MA — As climate change intensifies and flooding becomes a growing concern across Massachusetts, Waltham residents are turning to an often-overlooked resource – their own memories.
A new website created by Brandeis University combines oral histories, flood maps and infrastructure data to document how flooding has shaped neighborhoods across the city for decades, according to the Waltham Times.
The website, walthamfloodstories.com, is intended to preserve local knowledge while helping the city prepare for future climate dangers.

Among the site’s content are 32 oral history interviews collected since last winter by Brandeis faculty and students. Researchers shared selections from those interviews during a presentation at the Waltham Public Library on May 11.
Historic flooding events remain vivid for many residents. During floods in 2010, Beaver Brook and marshes in Lawrence Meadow overflowed, forcing the closure of Waverley Oaks Road and Trapelo Road.
