WALTHAM, MA — A fire in a Waltham house injured three people and left eight without a home early Sunday morning.

The blaze set off an alarm around 2:46 a.m. at 247 Bacon St., a two-family, wood-frame building, fire officials said Monday. Firefighters and police helped residents get out as flames began to spread through a third-floor window and from under the eaves.

The Waltham Fire Department called in two alarms, bringing multiple engines, ladder trucks and personnel to the scene. Crews had to cut tree branches in order to access parts of the building, and eventually evacuated as it weakened and the roof began to collapse.

Armstrong Ambulance transported three residents for evaluation and treatment. Their names and conditions were unavailable.

Fire, smoke and water heavily damaged the building on all three floors.

The state fire marshal’s office is working with the Waltham fire and police departments to investigate the cause of the blaze.
