What does it mean to find sanctuary in a world shaped by conflict, displacement, and shifting ideas of belonging? Internationally acclaimed artist Yinka Shonibare has spent his career using beauty, wit, and theatricality to examine complex histories of colonialism, cultural identity, power, and global exchange. In this virtual conversation with Dr. Gannit Ankori, Henry and Lois Foster Director and Chief Curator, Shonibare will reflect on the ideas and influences that have shaped his groundbreaking practice and the creation of Sanctuary City (2024).
Currently making its U.S. debut at the Rose Art Museum, Sanctuary City brings together 18 illuminated miniature buildings based on historic and contemporary places that have offered protection to people in times of crisis. As Yinka Shonibare: Sanctuary approaches the end of its presentation at the Rose before embarking on a national tour with the American Federation of Arts, this conversation offers a special opportunity to hear directly from the artist about the histories behind the installation and the urgent questions it raises about home, safety, identity, and our interconnected world.
