City Of Waltham Warns Residents Of Increase In Coyote Sightings
An increase in local development leading to a loss of natural habitat has led to more run-ins with coyotes.
WALTHAM, MA — The City of Waltham is warning residents of a recent increase in coyote sightings in the area and has released a list of tips on how to stay safe.
Although coyotes have always been in Waltham and surrounding communities, increased development leading to a loss of their natural habitat has caused more run-ins with the animals.
Coyotes are not nocturnal, but wish to avoid people and usually leave the area if a human is detected. However, if you see a coyote acting abnormal or causing an immediate threat, call 911.

The following is a list of ways to keep coyotes away from your property:
- Don't let coyotes intimidate you. Coyotes can be scared away with loud noises and bright lights. In dangerous situations, throw small objects at them or spray them with water.
- Secure garbage. Make sure all trash is in tough plastic containers with tight fitting lids. Keep it inside until the day of pick up if possible.
- Don't feed or try to pet coyotes. Feeding may cause them to act tame and lead to issues with behavior.
- Keep your pets safe. Pets should be restrained at all times, as coyotes do view cats and dogs as potential food.
- Feed pets indoors. Pet food may attract coyotes to your property.
- Keep bird feeding areas clean. The seeds attract small animals that coyotes prey upon.
- Close off crawl spaces. Coyotes use these spaces for resting and raising young.
- Cut back brushy edges in your yard: These areas provide cover for coyotes and their prey.
- Protect livestock and produce: Coyotes will prey upon livestock and fallen fruit will attract them.
- Educate your neighbors. Pass this information on to anyone who may be unaware of it.
