Philip McFarland discusses Mark Twain, Theodore Roosevelt, and the Arrival of a New Century
Mark Twain and Theodore Roosevelt, inarguably the most famous Americans of their time, could not have been more different. One was a staunch anti-imperial abolitionist and possibly the greatest humorist the U.S. has ever produced; the other, a much-idolized swashbuckler who would become one of the most popular presidents in history.
Philip McFarland reframes the history of the United States at the turn of the 20th century, from wars and peace, from it's humble agrarian beginnings to its triumph as a major world superpower, through the lens of two polarizing figures in American history.
