Expresso Yourself Coffeehouse - a new venue for local poets, storytellers and songwriters
Open mic for spoken word and singers. Feb 27 to feature storyteller Bruce Marcus.
Do you have a poem to share, a story to tell, a song to sing? Or would you just love to come in from the cold as poets, storytellers and singer songwriters entertain you on a chilly Saturday night? Then come to the Expresso Yourself Coffeehouse at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Medfield Church on Saturday February 27th. Reviving a First Parish tradition, this new coffeehouse is the passion and brainchild of Thea Iberall, an accomplished poet and storyteller, who saw a need for a welcoming space for the spoken (and sometimes sung!) word and moved to fill it. “There are lots of spoken word opportunities in Boston, but only a few in the MetroWest area. And hardly any within ten miles of Medfield. We want to change that.” Working with a small but dedicated army of volunteers, Thea has lined up great feature performers for the coffeehouse, to be held in the Parish Hall from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the last Saturday of the month. Open mic participants will have a five-minute time slot to share their writing based on a common theme. High school students and adults from all walks of life are welcome to join in the fun. Signups start at 6:30 pm.
In February, the theme is “Ah, Youth!” and the feature presenter is the wonderful storyteller Bruce Marcus. Bruce wows audiences with his original stories and crowd-pleasing rhyming tales. He has performed at Boston First Night Festival, The New England Folk Festival, Three Apples, Granite State Storytelling Festivals and many others. Bruce is the 2013 story slam winner at Sharing the Fire: The Northeast Storytelling Conference. He is also the coordinator for Story Space in Cambridge, MA. Come and join Bruce and share your story, poem or song too! Refreshments will be served. Series sponsored by Starbucks with additional help from Brothers Market. Suggested donation is $5; students $3. For more information, contact Linda Finkle 603-918-0848 lindainwinthrop@gmail.com
