Five things to keep in mind for springtime allergy sufferers
For those with seasonal allergies, spring can also signify the beginning of sinus congestion, a runny nose, and itchy and swollen eyes.

Most people across our region welcome spring with open arms. The dark, gray winter gives way to longer, sunnier and warmer days; flowers blossom and trees bloom; outdoor activity becomes comfortable once again. But for those with seasonal allergies, spring can also signify the beginning of sinus congestion, a runny nose, and itchy and swollen eyes. To make these weeks more bearable – and even enjoyable – for those prone to allergies, below are five important things to know.
Antihistamines can sometimes do more harm than good.
If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you’ve probably tried a variety of different over-the-counter allergy products to relieve symptoms. However, common antihistamines and decongestants can sometimes do more harm than good and allergy sufferers often get little relief. An allergic reaction is actually the body’s way to rid itself of an allergen, such as pollen, grass, oak or birch. Antihistamines will dry the body so there are fewer symptoms, but without these symptoms, allergens take longer to leave the body.

Reduce your exposure to allergens.
Although you may be tempted to keep your windows open to let in the spring breeze, it is important to remember that open windows can increase the effects of allergies, as they will let in unwanted allergens. If you sleep with windows open, pollen residue will find its way onto pillows, sheets, window sills and dressers and will be inhaled at night during sleep. Taking a shower after outdoor actives, particularly yard work, can also be helpful in reducing the body’s exposure to allergens. To add clean, fresh air to a room, you may want to consider an air purifier with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. Air conditioners also do the same job. However, be sure to clean and replace these appliances’ filters regularly.

Homeopathic remedies can help the body rid itself of allergens, naturally.
Homeopathic allergy remedies, which are natural and non-narcotic, can be a great alternative to traditional antihistamines or decongestants, as they can help the body respond more appropriately and stabilize itself without irritations like drowsiness or dry eye. One good natural remedy for allergies is quercetin, a flavonoid and antioxidant found in foods such as red onions, the skin of red apples and in black tea. Quercetin can suppress the emergence of histamines from mast cells. Eating local or raw honey can also help reduce symptoms. In our store, we carry a variety of homeopathic remedies, including an oral spray – Allergy New England Mix – that is specifically formulated to treat allergies that result from local allergens.
Help your body respond effectively to allergens.
It is important that your body is well rested and properly nourished in order to be able to fight off any illness, including allergies. Reduce your intake of processed foods with white flour or sugar and instead eat plenty of locally grown fruits and vegetables, which are in abundance in the spring. You should also exercise regularly and reduce stress on the body whenever possible. Getting a good night’s rest is essential to overall good health.
Take preventive measures for the next allergy season.
With any allergy treatment, it is best to begin the regimen in advance of the arrival of allergy season to give the body time to adjust and for the treatment to be most effective. So if you are prone to allergies, map out your allergen plan of attack before the next season rolls around.
