Major Renovation Completed at Mount Auburn Hospital

Addition to enhance Hematology/Oncology Center

Mount Auburn Hospital has just finished putting the finishing touches on a large-scale renovation of its Hematology/Oncology floor. The centerpiece of the renovation is a new Solarium, a beautiful room filled with plants and comfortable seating as well as floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Charles River. A place to relax and reflect. The Waiting Room has been expanded for better comfort and accessibility. In addition, there will now be a Wellness Center for patients featuring classes, support services and educational offerings. The Wellness Center and Solarium are made possible by a generous grant from the Sigmund Herzstein Jr. Trust in memory of Sigmund and Barbara Herzstein.

Lisa Weissmann, MD, Chair, Department of Hematology/Oncology, says, “These renovations should not only enhance the physical wellbeing of our patients and their families, but also provide space for their emotional nourishment during a difficult time.”

Mount Auburn Hospital’s Hematology/Oncology Center provides comprehensive care for individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer and hematological disorders. Experts at the Center work together with patients and families to provide personalized medical care complemented by the most advanced knowledge and technology. Medical hematologists/oncologists, radiation oncologists, oncology nurses and social workers staff the Center. Mount Auburn Hospital’s Rehabilitation Services has a dedicated physical therapy team specializing in cancer care including the prevention and management of lymphedema. Other members of the team include radiologists, pathologists, pharmacists and registered dieticians. After appropriate consultation with a medical and/or radiation oncologist, an individualized treatment plan is formulated, which may include chemotherapy, biotherapy, and/or radiation therapy, depending on the patient’s diagnosis.
