Waltham Land Trust Seeking Volunteer Trail Stewards
The Waltham Land Trust is currently recruiting volunteers to assist with maintaining select trails and parks in Waltham. On Saturday, April 1, the group is hoping to train a total of about twenty-five volunteers who will essentially serve as the "eyes and ears" of the Western Greenway Trail, the Mass Central Rail Trail, as well as the paths along the Charles River, in Prospect Hill Park, around Hardy Pond, and in the state-owned Beaver Brook reservations. After being trained and “processed”, these volunteers will work in conjunction with either the Mass Department of Conservation and Recreations (if stewarding along the Charles, the Mass Central Rail Trail, or in Beaver Brook North or Historic Reservations) or the City of Waltham’s Recreation Department (if at Prospect Hill Park). As part of the Prospect Hill Park Stewardship Program, the Land Trust has been coordinating closely with the City’s Recreation Department and the Waltham Recreation Board to create an ambassador program that will restore vitality to the oldest and largest City-owned park.
The Prospect Hill Park Stewardship Program will host the season kickoff party at the Prospect Hill Park Lodge on April 1 at noon for current stewards and those attending the training at 1 pm that afternoon. Everyone interested in learning more about stewardship should attend the Kickoff Party!
Ideally, stewards are at least 18 years old (or with parent who has also been trained) and must commit to walking designated sections of the trails on a regular basis (frequency depending on season). Living proximate to one’s desired stewarding location is a big plus. Interested parties should contact WLT Executive Director Sonja Wadman at swadman@walthamlandtrust.org or by calling 781-893-3355 to receive an interest form.
The Waltham Land Trust is a non-profit group creating a legacy of land conservation in Waltham by promoting, protecting, restoring, and acquiring open space. For more information on the Waltham Land Trust, visit walthamandtrust.org or call (781) 893-3355.
