Waltham Fields Farm Tomato Theft: Watertown Woman To Go To Court

WALTHAM, MA — Waltham Police summonsed a woman they suspect has something to do with the Labor Day tomato thefts from Waltham Fields Community Farm after a number of tips came into them, as first reported by the Waltham Channel on social media today and confirmed by Patch.

The woman, a 69-year-old Watertown resident faces two felony charges of larceny over $250, Detective Sergeant Tim King confirmed in an email to Patch. Because the woman was not arrested, he said police would not release her name. Grand larceny can be punished by a maximum sentence of five years in state prison, a maximum fine of $25,000, or a county jail sentence of up to 2 ½ years.

She is slated to first appear before a clerk-magistrate. If they find probable cause, the matter will likely move to an arraignment. A Waltham Fields Community Farm member posted an article to Patch on Sept. 1, reporting that for the third year in a row a woman drove to the farm and put about 100 pounds of tomatoes, valued at around $500, into her car, then drove off.

Waltham Fields Community Farm caught the incident on video the last two years. Both show the woman taking the tomatoes, placing them in her car and driving off.
