Become a Neighbors Who Care volunteer and gain a valued friend
Neighbors Who Care (NWC) pairs a volunteer with an isolated/lonely elder within the greater Waltham communities at no charge to the client. Many of our clients have outlived friends, family and/or neighbors and find themselves without much needed support.
Martha Ryan, NWC director, carefully matches a client with a volunteer and together they decide on what is best for both of them. Some of the activities our volunteers engage in are: visiting/”solving the problems of the world”; playing scrabble/whatever; having or going for tea/coffee/ice cream; going shopping/to a play/movie/concert; accompanying their client to a medical appointment; and “whatever friends do with each other.”
Although NWC would like a weekly commitment, we know that volunteers go on vacation and/or cannot always volunteer each week. The commitment is between the volunteer and the client.
Our volunteers love what they do…saying they have found a new friend or “family member” themselves…and they get more than they give.
