Whittemore School To Get A New Playground

The city collected bids for the playground this summer. Next up a community meeting early January.

WALTHAM, MA — Wondering what the new Whittemore Playground will look like? Drafts of the new schematic design will be on hand at a community meeting Monday, Jan. 7.

"I'm most excited about the chance to maximize Whittemore's outdoor footprint to provide our kids with the best outdoor experiences during the day that we can," said Principal Emma Herzog in an email to Patch.

Whittemore Elementary School to include the playground, soccer field, new playground equipment, drainage, front steps, hand rail repairs and repair walkways.

Six companies sent bids to the city that ranged in price from a $15,900 bid from Marshall/Gary based in Wakefield to a $42,500 bid from Ray Dunetz a landscape architecture firm based in Jamaica Plain.

In the end, Arsen Hambardzumian from NESRA Engineering based in East Taunton won the bid with a $24,800 project design.

Whittemore underwent a $25 million renovation in 2008.
