Are the Leaves Changing Color Early This Year?

During a recent stay in Waterville Valley, NH at the end of September 2014, we were surprised how colorful the leaves already were. In past years this seemed to occur closer to Columbus Day.

And coming back down to Massachusetts a few days ago, we were surprised as well by the many leaves on the ground already.
