Atrium School’s Destination Imagination Team Headed to Global Finals!

Atrium School's elementary team, the Genius Blue Giraffes, won first place at the Massachusetts Destination Imagination state tournament in March and qualified to attend the Global Finals – an international tournament held in Kansas City, MO at the end of May. Destination Imagination is an international non-profit program providing challenge-based competitions for students rooted in STEAM learning and creative problem solving.

This year, Atrium’s fifth grade team tackled the Fine Arts category; they were challenged to bring a work of visual art to life by creating and presenting a story inspired by the artwork. The Genius Blue Giraffes wrote, produced, and performed an original story inspired by Edvard Munch's The Scream which included a puppet opera, kinetic art, handmade props and scenery, and much more.

The team’s coach, Atrium parent Tracey Johnson, says, “While the team’s creativity, engineering, and storytelling skills were showcased in their final presentation, it was their teamwork, collaboration, and problem-solving behind the scenes that helped pave their way to victory” – earning them first place out of 14 teams in the elementary division! The Genius Blue Giraffes are honored to represent Massachusetts and Atrium School at the Destination Imagination Global Finals in late May 2024. The students come to Atrium School in Watertown from throughout the Greater Boston area, hailing from Arlington, Cambridge, Charlestown, Somerville, and Woburn.
