Belmont Man Arrested on OUI Charge After a Hit and Run Accident

Police caught the man after he tried to leave the scene of the accident on North Beacon Street on Saturday.

A 47-year-old Belmont man faces driving under the influence of alcohol charges after he allegedly struck a car on North Beacon Street and tried to leave the area.

On Saturday, Jan. 21 at 6:05 p.m., a driver told police she was rear-ended by a Honda Civic on North Beacon Street at Irving Street, and then fled the area, said Watertown Police Lt. Michael Lawn.

"(The driver) followed the car and observed the vehicle was all over the road," Lawn said.

The Honda then made a U-turn and headed the other way on North Beacon Street, Lawn said. Police stopped the car and found the driver, Steven J. Duede, had an odor of alcohol on his breath. He failed field sobriety tests and was arrested. Police also found he had an expired driver's license, Lawn said.

Duede, of 96A Sycamore St. in Belmont, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, unlicensed driving, failing to use care when stopping and leaving the scene of property damage.
