Bites Nearby: Victor's Diner

Off the beaten track on North Beacon Street, this eatery serves basic breakfast and lunch fare in a pleasant, homey atmosphere.

, at 214 N. Beacon St. (across from Perkins School) is busy at lunchtime – always a good sign. It isn't a self-consciously "retro" diner, but it does have those classic shiny metal, red-cushioned counter stools and nostalgic posters on the walls, There are bottles of ketchup on the tables, but also a flat-screen TV above the counter. And it's a "melting pot" of customers, too, including groups of co-workers, local residents, and the occasional diner hunched over a laptop.

The Food: This is basic American breakfast (all day) and lunch fare, such as omelettes, muffins, chicken cutlets, and fish specials on Fridays. There's a large selection of choices, so one can try different meals and find a favorite or two.

The Vibe: Friendly and casual – like somewhere in New Hampshire rather than the Boston Area. Leaving after having lunch in early May, for instance, one customer calls out: "Happy Mother's Day!"

Cool Factor no. 1: Even though the place is small, there are three waitresses and a bus person. So one doesn't feel rushed or like the staff are overworked.

Cool Factor no. 2: If you order a soda, such as Ginger Ale, Dr. Pepper, or Fanta Orange, it comes in its original 20-ounce bottle with a large glass and ice on the side – not a glass filled with ice and a few ounces of soda.
