In my Tumblr blog I’ve quoted Daniel Levitin, Leonard Bernstein, and Henry Van Dyke proposing that all humans should sing, not just the people who are judged to sing the “best.”
But I want to make sure everyone is actually paying attention. A lot of people get really scared when they think about singing, especially if others are going to hear them.
Why is Karaoke so popular? Why do so many people have to go into a dark room late at night, where they and everyone else are drunk, in order to sing? Apparently, darkness and drunkness are the only safe conditions under which to sing.

If the lights are on, if we’re sober, it’s not safe, it’s way too scary, we might be imperfect and make a mistake.
Our culture has divided us into the few who can sing perfectly and the many who can’t sing at all. This is so sad and bad and wrong and harmful. I meet people every day who secretly wish they were free to sing, but they believe that they can’t and need to stay silent.
