Library Museum Passes

Watertown Free Public Library offers library card holders passes to 21 Boston area museums.

Summer means a cottage at the seashore or lake, a lazy afternoon reading a good book, time out with the kids at the park or beach. It also can be a time to visit museums and sites around Boston. Passes to 21 area museums are part of Watertown Free Public Library services.

These discounted passes save everyone a sizable portion of the admission fee. Anyone holding a Minuteman Library card may reserve and borrow any pass for a one day visit. Recent statistics from the library show that in the past year – from June 2010 through May 2011 – there were 2633 museum goers who borrowed library passes.

Saturdays are the biggest borrowing day and August shows the highest monthly usage. With several museums now charging $20 and up for a single admission, a discounted price of $7 with a pass is a great bargain.

And it couldn’t be easier to plan. Just go the library website at www.watertownlib.org, click on Services, then Museum Passes. This brings you to a list of museums that can be reserved online with your library card and then picked up the day of use.

The library museum pass program is a great way to try a museum that is unfamiliar. Borrow the DeCordova Art Museum and Sculpture Park pass, pack a picnic and have a wonderful afternoon wandering through the beautiful grounds and sculpture on this estate in Lincoln.

The Massachusetts Audubon Society and Massachusetts State Parks passes give the holder parking discounts and entry to beautiful natural sites all over the state.

Museums are also  great places to take visiting friends and relatives. Many passes allow up to 4 people, so groups can plan a tour of Gore Place or follow historic guides from Boston by Foot. Of course, Boston’s renown Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Science, and John F. Kennedy Library and Museum are also great tourist attractions, and the library has passes to all these.

Everyone is looking for a bargain, and “staycations” may be the answer to a tightened summer budget this year. The library’s museum pass program can make that “stay at home” time really fun.
