There's Never Been a Better Time to Give Back

How will you be giving back this holiday season? Local spots that embrace the philanthropic spirit.

Now that the turkeys have been gobbled, the shopping has been conquered and the decorations have been hung, it's time to really get into the holiday season. No, this doesn't mean singing carols on the street or finding another excuse to buy those items you forgot on your Black Friday list. Rather, it's a great time to spread the holiday mentality by giving back to the community. This community may be people you see at your local coffee shop, they may be people you've seen in passing, or they may be people you've never even met. Regardless, the holidays are about so much more than what's seen on the outside.

If you're like me, you want to lend a hand but are uncertain about how and where to get involved. Luckily, Watertown and nearby neighborhoods embrace this philanthropic spirit around the holidays and provide several opportunities to pitch in. I've detailed several options below but if you know of anymore or would like an extra helping hand this holiday season, please feel free to start a discussion in the comments section below!

1. Watertown Library

Many of us grew up listening to loved ones share stories around the holidays. What better way to help out the community than to donate your holiday books to the Watertown Public Library? With this donation, you are not only able to give those dusty books on the shelf a new, loved home, but the profits made from selling these books help to fund various library programs. A gift that keeps on giving! Learn more by visiting the library's website here or by stopping by.

2. The Salvation Army in Waltham

Bought some extra gifts this year? Have some used goods that need a new home? Donate these items and more to your local Salvation Army store located at 33 Myrtle St. in Waltham. The website also accepts monetary donations, mail-in donations, vehicle donations and more! There's never been a better time to give back.

3. Watertown Food Pantry

We all love to stock up on our favorite foods around the holiday season, but this holiday season why not donate your extras to a local food pantry? Be sure to check your pantries for any non-perishable goods that could truly be put to a good cause. Residents can visit the Watertown Food Pantry at St. John's Methodist Church, online at http://www.gbgm-umc.org/watertown/ or by phone 617-972-6429.

4. Sister Thrift

Similar to The Salvation Army, Sister Thrift (located at 370 Pleasant Street in Watertown) accepts new and used goods and clothing to sell in their store. In Sister Thrift, shoppers can find men's, women's and kid's brand name items in a variety of colors, sizes and styles. The store also carries a large selection of handbags, belts, shoes, jewelry, furniture, toys and more stocked on a consistent basis. Sister Thrift has partnered with the MetroWest Humane Society for over seven years, and every purchase helps to support the animals at this local non-profit no-kill animal shelter. More information can be found by calling 617-932-1168.

Please feel free to share how and where you'll be helping out this holiday season in the comments section below! There's never been a better time to give back.
