Watertown Musicians: I Know You're Out There!

Watertown has its own cluster of artists, musicians, and arts organizations. Neighboring Cambridge has a plethora. Where do you showcase your art and music?

Watertown has its own cluster of notable artists and performers: Jeff DaRosa of the Dropkick Murphys, Eliza Dushku, and Tom Scholz, who recorded his band, Boston, in his Watertown basement.

Watertown also is home to organizations such as the Arsenal Center for the Arts, Boston School of Rock, Friends of Watertown Music, and the New Repertory Theater.

There are a good deal of recording studios in Watertown, too. And, from what I've encountered, lots of musicians. But what about gigs?

I drum in a trio with my sister, Sarah (jazz guitar, vocals), and our friend Gary (keys, vocals), but we tend to gig in Cambridge. It's closeby, and a hub of creativity. Cambridge, Boston, even Salem. For someone who writes a lot about musicians, I admit I'm pretty unaware of musical offerings in Watertown, aside from what I mentioned above.

When I had first moved back to the Boston area after college, I loved going to Comfort. Comfort was above one of my favorite restaurants, Molana, and they had open mic nights on Tuesdays. It was a cozy and friendly atmosphere, but Comfort is no longer.

Another musician I know, Xenia Dunford, is performing at Payson Park Church in Watertown on June 19. I admit that I have never attended an event there, either.

I suppose a lot of us reside in Watertown because of its easy access to Boston and Cambridge, general lack of loud college parties, and (maybe it's just me, oink oink) awesome dining.

I've been focusing on profiling careers in music and audio for my blog project, and have worked with many musicians at my full time jobs. During election season, I ran into a woman who was raising money for Watertown's music education program. With an art teacher for a mother, and a music educator for a sister, this is something that speaks to me loud and clear. I would like to be more involved in music on a community level.

Watertown has recently been buzzing with talks of what the town's future will look like, or what direction residents would like to see the town go in.

I want to hear from you, artists and musicians! Do you showcase your work in Watertown? Where? What do you think about the local art and music scene?
