DOUBLE FINALISTS - Watertown High Field Hockey, Boys' Soccer Teams Heading to the State Final

Oh what a night for Watertown Raiders' fans. 

The Watertown High School field hockey team clinched yet another state final spot after defeating Apponequet 3-0 in the semifinal at Reading High School Wednesday evening, and hours later, the boys' soccer team won a second straight penalty shootout against Dover-Sherborn to get to their first state final in years, if ever.

The Raiders struck first off a corner kick when Rafael DeSouza scored directly from a corner kick with 15 minutes left in the first half of the game played at Veterans Stadium in Quincy. Dover-Sherborn tied it up with 27 minutes left in the second half, on a corner kick of its own.

The teams could not find the back of the net for the rest of regulation, nor during the two 10-minute sudden death overtime periods. For the second straight tournament game, Watertown went to the penalty shootout and once again goalie Greg Koutroukas made the key save.

The Raiders won the shootout 5-3 and booked a place in the MIAA Div. 3 state final against Sutton at Worcester's Foley Stadium on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Field Hockey

Watertown's Emily Loprete scored three minutes into the MIAA Div. 2 field hockey semifinal against Apponequet, and struck again three minutes into the second half as the Raiders rolled into the state final Wednesday night.

The scoring was capped off by Rachel Campbell, who scored late in the second half. 

The field hockey team sets up a rematch with Oakmont at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Worcester State University. Watertown seeks a fourth straight state crown, and to extend its 91-game unbeaten streak.
