Downed Utility Pole Shuts Down Pleasant Street

Road closed from Green Street to Watertown Square. Pole fell onto two cars on Cross Street.

A utility pole fell onto two cars on Cross Street, near Pleasant Street, at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday and authorities closed Pleasant from Green Street to Watertown Square because of the low-hanging wires.

Watertown Fire and Police personnel are waiting for NSTAR crews to come turn off power to the pole, which has a transformer on top, said Deputy Fire Chief Dan Tardif.

The electrical, telephone and cable wires remain attached to the pole, and electricity continues to flow to nearby homes and businesses. Power must be cut for the pole to be removed from the top of the cars on which it now rests, Tardif said. The cars did not appear to have much damage.

Why the pole came down is not clear, Tardif said. It might have been the winds or the bottom of the pole might have rotted, he said.
