Off-Broadway musical opens this weekend at the Arsenal Center.

“Feed me!” Anyone who has seen "Little Shop of Horrors" on screen or stage can’t help but hear that loud bellowing command from Seymour, the paranormal plant with a voracious appetite. According to New Rep’s Artistic Director Jim Petosa, “Since its earliest iteration ... 'Little Shop of Horrors' has found its place in the giddy hearts of both musical theatre artists and their audiences throughout the country. Its satiric pokings at the clichés of good ole American virtues mix with an undeniable affecting sentimentality.”

This cult classic, written by Howard Ashman with music by Alan Menken, first gained popularity off-Broadway in 1982, later appeared on Broadway, and was turned into a film in 1986.

“I’ve loved ‘Little Shop’ since seeing the original off-Broadway cast almost 30 years ago,” says Russell Garrett, the production’s director and choreographer. “Our team – some familiar faces/voices and some new ones – will breathe new life into the play, honoring what has always made it great and adding special touches.”

Petosa adds, “Russell’s affection for the play and his clear understanding of what makes it tick, along with Todd Gordon’s indispensable musical direction, promise a production at the highest comedic and theatrical level.”
