School Committee Honors Watertown Boys' Basketball Team

Team made it all the way to the MIAA Div. 3 state final this year.

The Watertown boys' basketball team's run to the state final provided a bright point in an often dark and gloomy winter, said School Committee Chairman Anthony Paolillo.

The Raiders finished 19-6, and took the Middlesex League title and won the Div. 3 North Section title.

This week, the School Committee honored the Raiders for their successful season, which ended in Worcester with a loss to Whitinsville Christian in the MIAA Div. 3 state final.

"You make our winters much more fun to deal with," Paolillo said.

The team has had a lot of success, said Athletic Director Michael Lahiff, with 15 straight tournament appearances, three Middlesex League titles, five North Section titles and two state championships.

Head coach Steve Harrington said he knew the team would be a pleasure to work with this year.

"We had a terrific year led by a phenomenal group of seniors. It was a wonderful group to coach," Harrington said. "When I saw them coming up, I knew I would have no problems this year.

"I was glad they were rewarded with a terrific season."

The team always had a great attitude, Lahiff said.

"When I would go into the gym, they would work hard and have a good time as well," Lahiff siad.

Paolillo told the players that they have made the whole town proud.

"I know you are all disappointed that you could not win (the state title)," Paolillo said. "I want to make sure you know how much you are appreciated not only by the high school and the school community but also the entire town."
