"Three Photographers" Exhibit on Display at the Arsenal Center

Photos provide unique views of man-made structures and human events.

This Saturday, the Arsenal Center for the Arts will open its doors to the public for its annual Open Arts Day. Along with live music, dance performances, and art demos, be sure to check out Three Photographers: Lynn Whitney, Daniel Lovering, Mark Peterson. The exhibit opened last week and features a total of 35 photographs.

Peterson’s work is taken from his series "Underpass: Accidental Interiors," which looks at the underside of Boston, particularly bridges and highways. These people-less photos draw the viewer’s attention to the largeness of the steel and cement structures.

"My intent is to take an ordinary view of a specific but possibly anonymous site and expose a hidden composition within it," he states. Local audiences may recognize his shots of a Green Line tunnel, a Mass Pike bridge arching over the Charles, and other local scenes.

Whitney’s black and white photos also deal with large structures, specifically construction sites and bridges, shot from above or afar. Some of her best-known photographs document the project to replace the Craig Memorial Bridge in Toledo, Ohio. The images document the bridge’s changes along with the transformation of the overall landscape.

Lovering’s photos come from his life as a well-traveled journalist and photographer, primarily for The Associated Press. This exhibit includes images of everyday life and struggles: the deteriorating but colorful buildings in Havana; Indian women walking in bright saris; the closed faces of the young Shan Rebels in Burma, lining up outdoors for food; a girl searching through piles of donated clothing at a refugee camp in Thailand after the Indian Ocean tsunami.
