Two Arrested for Breaking into Cars, Stealing Cash and Checks

Police discovered the driver and passenger had taken the vehicle without permission.

Two young men were arrested for breaking into cars and stealing items on Monday at 3:10 a.m., said Police Lt. Michael Lawn.

Watertown Police officer Emily Doss spotted a 2000 Toyota van driving down Orchard Street with no lights on, so she pulled the car over.

"As she approached she observed the two people in the car moving around, reaching down and looking back," Lawn said.

Doss found that the driver, a 15-year old boy from Belmont, did not have a license, and discovered that the boy and his passenger, Conrad W. Burchfiel, 17, of 21 Davis Road in Belmont, took the van from a friend's house in Belmont without permission, Lawn said.

"Officer Doss discovered a check on the floor of the vehicle from a local business," Lawn said. "She also found a bag containing more checks from the business and some cash."

When police contacted the business owner, he said that two vehicles had been broken into, and items had been stolen from them, Lawn said.

Both the suspects were arrested on charges of using a motor vehicle without authority, two counts of nighttime breaking and entering of a vehicle, and receiving stolen property worth more than $250. The 15-year old also faces charges of unlicensed driving and a vehicle lights violation, Lawn said.
