Watertown 'Cadets' Learning the Ropes at the Middlesex Sheriff's Youth Academy

Two teams of youngsters from Watertown will be honored by Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian on Friday when they complete the 2011 Middlesex Sheriff’s Office Youth Public Safety Academy.

Koutoujian, , will recognize graduates from Cambridge, Newton, Waltham along with those children from Watertown.

This is the 12th summer that the Middlesex Sheriff's office has sponsored the week-long summer program. The academy exposes our children to role models in Public Safety – local police, fire, emergency medical services and sheriff’s personnel, according to the Sheriff's office. Wednesday they will visit the Watertown fire and police stations.

Cadets, who range in age from 9 to 11, learn basic first aid skills, fire safety, and tour their local police and fire stations. They will also participate in numerous demonstrations and are taught the importance of self-esteem and teamwork during the week, according to the Sheriff's office.

Cadets will be given diplomas in recognition of their hard work and dedication to public safety at a ceremony at the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office Training Academy in Billerica.
