Watertown Fire Log: July 11 to July 17
Firefighters bust down door to get into apartment, boy breaks his wrist jumping off swing and burned toast sets off smoke detector.

Incidents
July 11, 9:22 a.m.: Firefighters went to Westminster Avenue after a smoke detector was activated. When they arrived, they found that the detector had been set off by burned toast.
July 11, 7:48 p.m.: Food on an outside grill caught fire and the blaze grew out of control. The grill was shut off and the fire went out.

July 13, 4:32 p.m.: A small tree on Spring Street near Main Street caught fire. The blaze was put out using a fire extinguisher.
July 13, 5:09 p.m.: A Belmont Street-resident hit is medical alert button and when fire crews arrived he told them he wanted to see if they could get him a taxi to a medical appointment more quickly. Firefighters told them that they could not help him with that.

July 14, 7:01 a.m.: A fire alarm sounded at a home on Bigelow Avenue, and when fire crews arrived they found that food had burned in a microwave. The microwave was removed and firefighters ventilated the building.
July 14, 8:20 a.m.: Fire crews went to Oliver Road for a reported transformer explosion and power outage. It appeared that a bird caused the outage by landing on the transformer.
July 15, 10:43 a.m.: A boy fractured his right wrist and scraped his face and chin when he jumped off a swing at Filippello Park. His arm was splinted and he was taken to Newton-Wellesley Hospital.
July 15, 4:46 p.m.: Water leaked into a business in a home at Locke Street. Fire crews found a water line had broken, so they shut off water to the house.
July 16, 3:56 p.m.: A man tripped while crossing the street and hit his head. He was bleeding when firefighters arrived, they treated him and transported him to Beth Israel Hospital.
July 17, 1:42 p.m.: Firefighters went to Russo's on Pleasant Street for a mulch fire. The flames were put out.
July 17, 1:54 p.m.: Firefighters arrived at an apartment on Coolidge Avenue to respond to a Life Line alert. The apartment was double bolted, and the apartment was too high to use the ladder to gain entry. The building supervisor had a key for the door lock, but not the deadbolt, so firefighters use a ram to force the door open. The man was dehydrated, so he was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital.
July 17, 2:34 p.m.: Smoke was coming from an apartment on Summer Street, but nobody was home. Watertown Police had to force open the door. When fire crews arrived they hooked up a hose and went into the kitchen, where they found a pot in which a fire had occurred, but was extinguished.
July 17, 8:37 p.m.: An outdoor fire was reported on Hardy Avenue and when firefighters arrived they found that residents had been burning small twigs and branches in a barbecue. The fire was put out and the people were told that they were violating the town's outside burning ordinance.
