Watertown Fire Log: June 27 to July 4

Electrical explosion at Casey Field, hydraulic fluid leak and a woman burned by hot grease.

Incidents

June 27, 7:31 p.m.: A Lexington Street resident smelled an odor of natural gas. Fire crews went to the area and could not find any gas with their detectors, but did find that the exhaust hose from the dryer was disconnected. They reconnected the dryer hose.

June 28, 10:59 a.m.: A gas leak was reported on Lexington Street. A gas leak was found at a service valve. NStar was informed of the leak.

June 28, 12:16 p.m.: A fire alarm sounded in the Arsenal Mall. When fire crews arrived, employees at the Foot Locker said that a little girl had pulled the alarm in the store. The alarm was reset.

June 28, 4:56 p.m.: A cooking fire was reported at the Repton Place apartments. The fire was limited to the cooking pot, and smoke in the third-story stairwell set off the alarm. Fire crews ventilated the area.

June 28, 6:13 p.m.: A motorcyclist hit a parked car on Main Street at Purvis Street. Fire crews fully immobilized the rider’s spine and took him to the Mt. Auburn Hospital emergency room.

June 28, 7:39 p.m.: Electrical equipment at Casey Field caught fire and exploded while Watertown Youth Baseball was using the field. Firefighters set up a safe area, and NStar disconnected the electrical service. The equipment was heavily damaged.

June 30, 1:43 a.m.: A worker at a store on Nichols Avenue reported the odor of natural gas. When fire crews arrived they discovered the smell was from a new coat of polyurethane that had been applied to floors in the store next door.

June 30, 10:24 a.m.: Hydraulic fluid was leaking into a storm drain from a business on Pleasant Street. An employee had stopped the leak by the time firefighters arrived and put down an absorbent material. The state Department of Environmental Protection and Clean Harbors had been alerted. Firefighters put down more absorbing pads before leaving.

July 1, 6:51 a.m.: Firefighters responded to a possible transformer explosion on Adams Street. They found that fuses for two high-tension wires had blown after a bird was electrocuted. NStar was notified.

July 1, 2:45 p.m.: One of the drivers involved in a two-car accident on Arsenal Street suffered injuries. The woman complained of pain on the right side of her neck. She was taken to Mt. Auburn Hospital.

July 2, 2:51 p.m.: Fire crews responded to a car accident on Main Street at Spring Street. One driver needed medical care and was taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. While they were there, an emergency arose with a 41-year old woman. She ultimately declined to be taken to hospital.

July 2, 3:13 p.m.: A woman suffered burns on her upper thigh when she was splattered by grease while cooking. Firefighters put a dry bandage and a cold compress on the burn.
